The Leader’s Mindset: Developing Leadership and Mentorship

Leadership and mentorship aren’t optional—they’re essential to the fire service. They are the keystone of who we are and how we serve. This course is built to help people at every level discover and develop their own leadership potential.

Leaders aren’t born—they’re shaped over years of challenge, growth, and reflection. In this class, we begin by exploring the mindset of a leader—what it looks like, how it’s cultivated, and how it shows up in daily actions. From there, we focus on helping you build the kind of leadership presence that draws others in: not through authority, but through authenticity and purpose.

You’ll leave this session with a clearer understanding of who you are as a leader—and you’ll define your personal Vision, your “why,” your purpose for showing up, leading, and making a difference.

Learning Theory: How Leaders Reach and Inspire

Being a subject matter expert is valuable—but knowledge alone isn’t enough. If you want to teach, lead, or inspire, you need to understand how people learn. This course equips you with the mindset and tools to reach others more effectively—whether you’re training recruits, coaching peers, or presenting to your community.

We’ll break down key adult learning theories and explore how to connect with different types of learners. You’ll discover practical techniques that make your content more engaging and your message more meaningful. And most importantly, you’ll learn how to inspire people to want to grow—not just because they have to, but because they want to.

By the end, you’ll walk away with a sharper teaching edge—and the confidence to reach your audience, wherever they are.

Attributes: What Your Team and Leaders Expect from You

What do people really expect from their teammates? What do senior leaders value in those they promote and trust? Over years of surveys, feedback loops, and boots-on-the-ground experience, we’ve uncovered a clear picture of the attributes that matter most.

This class distills those findings into a focused and actionable session. You’ll explore the traits that your peers respect, that build trust on a crew, and that leaders look for when they’re deciding who’s ready for more. This is not a generic list of “nice-to-haves”—these are the real qualities that make a difference on the floor and in the field.

The goal? To help you identify the areas where you’re strong, see where you can grow, and start building habits that strengthen your influence, your credibility, and your impact.
